The Bexar Safety American Red Cross Lifeguarding – Blended Learning course combines self-paced online learning with instructor-led classroom instruction, hands-on skills practice, and realistic aquatic rescue scenarios.
This course follows the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program and is designed to prepare participants to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies while providing professional-level care until more advanced medical personnel arrive.
The blended format allows participants to complete foundational coursework online while preserving the practical, performance-based training required for lifeguard certification.
Course Format
This is an American Red Cross blended learning course consisting of:
- Online coursework completed prior to designated in-person sessions
- Classroom instruction and discussion
- Land-based rescue and emergency care skills
- Pool-based lifeguarding skills
- Team response and rescue scenarios
- Skills practice, evaluation, and final course requirements
Participants must complete all assigned online learning and attend all required in-person portions of the course.

- Lifeguard responsibilities and professional conduct
- Surveillance and patron recognition
- Preventing injuries and aquatic emergencies
- Entry techniques and rescue approaches
- Active and passive victim rescues
- Submerged victim response
- Escapes and defensive techniques
- Spinal motion restriction and aquatic spinal emergencies
- Emergency action plans and team response
- CPR/AED and emergency care skills
- First aid and injury management
- Multiple-rescuer scenarios
- Removal of victims from the water
- Facility safety and emergency preparedness
Certification
Participants who successfully complete all American Red Cross course requirements, including assigned online learning, required in-person training, skills evaluations, scenarios, and written assessments, will be eligible to receive the applicable American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
Attendance at all scheduled in-person sessions is mandatory. Enrollment alone does not guarantee certification.
Prerequisites
Lifeguarding is a physically demanding course. Participants must meet all applicable American Red Cross prerequisite requirements and successfully complete the required prerequisite skills evaluation before continuing in the course.
Participants should be comfortable swimming in deep water and prepared for repeated swimming, diving, lifting, towing, and rescue activities throughout the program.

- Appropriate swim attire
- Towel
- Change of clothes
- Water and snacks
- Notebook or device for course materials
- Any additional items identified in the pre-course instructions

Prerequisites & Certification
Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of the course and successfully complete the American Red Cross prerequisite swimming skills evaluation.
Prerequisite skills include:
- Completing a continuous swim–tread–swim sequence: 150-yard swim, 2 minutes of treading water using only the legs, followed by a 50-yard swim.
- Completing a timed retrieval event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, including a 20-yard swim, retrieval of a 10-pound object from a depth of 7–10 feet, a 20-yard return while holding the object, and exiting the water without using steps or a ladder.
Participants must also complete all required blended-learning coursework, attend all required in-person sessions, demonstrate competency in required skills, and successfully complete the required course assessments.
Participants who successfully complete all course requirements receive an American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification, valid for 2 years.
