The American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies: Comprehensive First Aid/CPR/AED (RTE) program provides in-depth training for participants who want a broader understanding of emergency care than is typically provided in a basic First Aid/CPR/AED course.
Participants develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiac, breathing, medical, and traumatic emergencies and provide appropriate care until more advanced medical assistance is available. Red Cross describes RTE as a comprehensive program particularly well suited for academic, public-safety, recreation, and other settings requiring a more extensive emergency-care curriculum.
This blended-learning offering includes RTE with:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Administering Emergency Oxygen (AEO)
- Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)
- Epinephrine administration
- Asthma emergency care
The course combines assigned online learning with instructor-led, hands-on skills training and assessment.
Course content emphasizes recognition and response to emergencies involving adults, children, and infants and may include:
- Patient assessment and emergency action
- Cardiac and breathing emergencies
- CPR and AED use
- First aid for injuries and sudden illnesses
- Bleeding and injury management
- Professional-level resuscitation concepts through the included BLS component
- Emergency oxygen administration
- Bloodborne-pathogen safety
- Epinephrine-related emergencies
- Asthma-related emergencies
- Scenario-based emergency response and decision-making
Participants must complete all assigned online coursework, required skills sessions, evaluations, and other American Red Cross course-completion requirements to receive the applicable Red Cross certification(s).
This program is particularly appropriate for students, educators, public-safety personnel, recreation and camp professionals, coaches, safety personnel, and others seeking a more comprehensive emergency-care curriculum.

In-Person Skills Session
The in-person skills session is scheduled for approximately 2 hours. Please arrive 10–15 minutes early and allow an additional 15–20 minutes if needed for skills practice, assessment, remediation, or course completion requirements.
