American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) – Blended Learning
The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course is designed for healthcare and public-safety professionals who may be required to respond to cardiac, breathing, and other life-threatening emergencies involving adults, children, and infants.
This blended-learning course combines self-paced online instruction with an instructor-led, hands-on skills session. Participants complete the assigned online coursework before attending the in-person session to demonstrate and refine professional-level resuscitation skills. Red Cross currently describes the blended format as approximately 1–2 hours online plus a 2–3 hour in-person skills session.
Course content includes:
- Adult, child, and infant CPR
- AED use
- Recognition and response to breathing and cardiac emergencies
- Choking and obstructed-airway emergencies
- Team-based resuscitation
- Critical thinking, communication, and clinical decision-making
- Opioid-associated emergencies
BLS is appropriate for nurses, physicians, EMS personnel, CNAs, firefighters, law-enforcement/public-safety personnel, and other professionals whose work requires healthcare-level resuscitation training.
Participants who successfully complete all required online coursework, in-person skills assessments, and course requirements receive an American Red Cross Basic Life Support digital certification valid for 2 years.
